Club news

This week's Celeb "Ham" not only got the best of the weather but also a great turnout, and judging by the car park on Tuesday morning a very late night was had with craic and music in to the wee hours.

The competition was generously sponsored by Bill and Patricia O'Brien of Brady's family ham and the winners were the team of Catherine Farrelly, Kay Redmond, Mary Burns and our own Conor O'Rourke, who as we know represented Ireland this year at the European and Home internationals.

A big congratulations to Kay Redmond who had a hole in one on our 3rd green which made it a very special day indeed, well done Kay!! I would also like to thank my own playing partners Andy Hennessy, Seamus Redmond and Mick Keane who were great company and fun, thanks for a great day and well played!

Congratulations to our Geraldine League team who won this years competition last week at Beech Park GC. Well done to Brian Cagney and Mary Flahavan who put in a lot of their time in to junior golf and this competition, it is particularly satisfying as it focuses on our developing juniors and gives them experience in a competitive environment. Eoin McCormack was the team captain and his experience and encouragement to those playing would have been invaluable so well done Eoin and the Naas junior academy!

Coaching news

One club that golfers of all levels have difficulty with is a 3 wood, all the variables go against this club being easy to hit. Quite a long club, generally around 43 inches, a small hitting area and very little loft, many golfers will find this a familiar story and that they hit their 5 wood equally as long.

So why is that?

Well, speed has a lot to do with how easy or difficult it can be to get these lower lofted clubs in to the air and carrying the distance you need to justify having it in the bag. Over the years I have noticed that less and less people are using a 3 wood and reverting back to a 5 wood. With adjustability we are able to reduce the loft on a the 5 wood heads to give you that little bit more and also lengthen the shaft to 3 wood length. So in a nut shell there are options to achieve the extra distance you strive for on those long par 4s and par 5s not to mention long par 3s over water!!

Our friends at PING have come up with a very effective and forgiving solution with the G series 16 degree SF Tec 3 wood. Adjustability is available, so lofts can be changed to best fit your requirements and this head has a slight draw bias which even if you don't necessarily need a fix to right to left shots, makes it much easier to draw the ball and gain more distance.

As you know by now our best advice is to get a fitting and find out what the numbers say but this club is available for you to try and I would really encourage you to do so if you have distance from the fairway in mind.
