I don't think I have ever met a golfer who does not want more distance either from his/her driver or irons or both! Distance is not the beginning and end BUT it does make a huge difference when it comes to making.
Mark Broadie's book, shots gained, discusses the art of scoring and what goes in to scoring better. For many years we have used the expression "drive for show and putt for dough" and I would still say that head to head when it comes down to it, a chip or a putt makes all the difference.
However over time and particularly when playing singles competitions, your average proximity to the hole will, according to research, have more of a bearing on your average score.
If you factor in that the closer you are to the hole the shorter the club you can use then the statistics begin to work in your favour as it goes without saying that you can hit a 9 iron more accurately than a 5 iron!
