Last week was a busy week at the club with the Captains Prize qualifying rounds, the Pro Am and our ladies out in the Finn Trophy final. Unfortunately our ladies were beaten but it has been a great year for the club in terms of our teams competing and although we have no pennants to show this year if we keep improving it is only a matter of time. Well done to everyone involved!
The Pro Am was a very enjoyable day and my thanks to Michael McGinley once again for his generous sponsorship, my sincere thanks also to everyone who put in a team and played on the day including my colleagues in the PGA. I received a lot of texts complimenting the course and the organising of the day which is largely down to our club manager Denis and course manager David. Well done to the team winners Gus Fitzpatrick Jnr, Monica Fitzpatrick and Anne Fitzpatrick along with their Professional Donal Gleeson from Old Conna. Naas driving range have been great supporters of the Pro Am for many years so it was great to see them pick up the first prize. Also good to see local professional John Dignam and my friend John Kelly tie for first place with a score of 70 which was a great reflection on just how tough our course can be set up and I know this carried over in to the Captains Prize, tough but fair.
Best of luck to everyone competing in the final round of the Captains prize this weekend. There will be lots of ebbing and flowing over the day and my advice to anyone playing is simply to hang in until the end. Although the course is playing tough there are opportunities out there and everyone will have a few bad holes so hang tough and take each shot as it comes. If you are practising during the week, work on your long putting. With the greens as fast as they are it will be an advantage if you can eliminate three putting from long distance.
My thanks to Jessica McNulty and Paul Conway for their company and competitive spirit at the PGA Tankard finals in Carlow this week. We had 48points in the team event with one score to count from three. We were atop the leaderboard for much of the day but it was not to be. They played great golf and we had a very enjoyable day.
