Don't stretch before you play!

Yes the title of this newsletter suggests exactly that. Stretching before you play is NOT the best way for you to get ready to play. Last week we introduced to you some of the services we provide around swing specific exercise programs and what we can offer you in terms of individualising swing and training programs designed specifically for your golfing needs. We had a great response to this with many of you booked in for swing assessments and screenings over the coming weeks.

Back to stretching. While it is a common practice to stretch muscles before you play and often encouraged, research suggests otherwise. The purpose of stretching is to encourage more flexibility and evidence suggests that this can be counterproductive when muscles are cold leading to poor performance and a greater chance of injury particularly when your task is to stand up on the first tee and hit a driver at full tilt! Dynamic rather than static (stretching) warm ups are much better when the task is an explosive movement which is exactly what hitting a driver from a static position is.

Our programs are specific to YOU, your limitations or abilities and we work within the time you are prepared to put in. If you find you have some lower back or joint pain after playing golf or you are constantly returning to physiotherapy for work on the same old injuries then it might be worth looking at your warm up, your golf swing and your physical restrictions for the solution. At the very least we can help you to eliminate or discover what might be causing some of those niggles and in the worst case, pain.

Big Phil takes the bragging rights

The long-awaited match between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson took place last week and, with a combined 19 Majors between them, sparks were expected to fly. Las Vegas was an apt setting for the winner-takes-all event, and there was drama right up to the very last, as Big Phil came away with the $9m prize on the fourth extra hole after Woods had forced a play-off when he chipped in on the 17th.

Whilst the quality of golf wasn't quite up to what we expected, it was certainly a unique way of playing the game and could even be done again in the future - get in touch and let us know your thoughts!

Elsewhere, the European Tour got underway at the Hong Kong Open, with Englishman Aaron Rai fending off a strong challenge from compatriot Matthew Fitzpatrick to win his first title on the tour. Fitzpatrick was within touching distance, but a bogey on the 17th allowed Rai to take the victory on -17, with Fitzpatrick one shot further back.

The Belgian pair of Thomas Pieters and Thomas Detry secured the World Cup of Golf event down under in Australia over the weekend. The Belgian bombers finished three shots ahead of the home favourites Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith, and sealed victory for the first time for their nation.

In the past, golf clothing has had the reputation of being “for the golf course” with a call to the fashion police needed if you were to wear it anywhere else. Divide and conquer

Sometimes in golf, it's the little things which really grind your gears.
