Haven't we all either heard or had it said to us. Our parents knew best when they emphasised the importance of good posture and the same is true in golf. Last week we discussed how important it is to warm up correctly and contrary to popular belief I recommended that you DO NOT stretch before you play. Instead a dynamic warm up would be much more beneficial to your game. When we swing a golf club it is important we engage some key muscle groups in order for us to generate power in an efficient and healthy way. Without doing so we could cause long term injury which would be terrible as we all enjoy playing golf and if we are injured either it becomes unpleasant or we end up having to stop playing altogether. In the picture below I have a before and after of one of our best golfers, Mark Duffy who came in cold and we recorded some light shots and his posture post doing a dynamic warm up. This warm up was short and on a very basic level but just look at the impact it had on his posture. Over a round of golf a tour player can lose up to 2 inches in height due to the fatigue of swinging and walking over 4-5 hours and over a distance of up to 8km. My point is that regardless of your level or handicap, you can attain a good posture. You may not be able to move like Cameron Champ but knowing how to work on your posture and strengthening and creating endurance in the muscles involved is the simplest way for you to play better and enjoy injury free golf. In addition it gives you a great chance to improve the way you swing and get that extra distance we all crave! Posture is not generic and everyone will have a different prescription so good advice is essential and that is why we screen all our clients prior to any postural exercises or drills.
