Great Year for Irish Golf What an amazing year for Irish golf with James Sugrue winning the Amateur in Portmarnock and Shane winning at Portrush. The course and the crowds made the week and many of you played your part in what was one of the most exciting Open Championships if only because we were all praying for Shane to get the job done. In the end, it was a one-horse race but we Irish know sport and it is never done until it is done. I had the pleasure of walking 9 holes with Shane inside the ropes at Lahinch and he certainly looked calm and comfortable. His game looked good without being exceptional but when the moment came he pounced on the opportunity. He was patient and ready. I really enjoyed watching him on Saturday, a great player in a great mind-set playing as if he could birdie every hole and on the back 9 on Saturday he damn near did that. Exceptional performance by Shane and an inspiration to every golfer! |
