Captain's Charity Challenge

I hope you all enjoyed the Captain's Charity Challenge and there were some golf related ideas that you should keep in mind when we get back to playing and practicing. It’s a great cause and well done to Captain Alan and Barbara for supporting the initiative.

 

Tips to retaining information

Over the past few weeks we have had more time to read and look at golf videos and DVDs, and that certainly has been a positive. It’s easy to become overwhelmed by it all and end up more confused by information overload! It’s hard not to look at everything that you come across because as golfers, well, we just love looking at golf. Like you I have been doing my own research and listening to podcasts, doing certifications, talking to coaches home and abroad but rather than dive in I am now selecting only one thing to look at or read every day and I bring a notebook where I can write down the things that make sense to me and I think I can bring to my own game, coaching or business. In whatever you are looking or reading, if you can take 1 thing that gives you an “ah ha” moment then write it down. Over the first couple of weeks I found that I was absorbing lots of really interesting information, videos and books, loads of entertainment but not much retention, if that resonates with you try this approach of selecting one chapter in a book, a you tube video etc but take your time and get something from it! When things return to a version of normality we will all wish for time to do these things.

Our Physio Ronan, has put together a short video which we have included along with some additional videos from Julia around our theme of set-up positions, body alignments, correct rotation for the golfer and appropriate exercises. Click here for the link and don't forget the password is dlgc. Next week we will discuss some key areas of the backswing. The backswing sets you up to deliver the club to the ball with the freedom of being able to apply force and strength. It does not have to be perfect but there are things you need to know that can be applied to every golfer. Julia and Ronan will add some exercises and thoughts on why these can be difficult for golfers to achieve and what you can do to help your chances of creating a better backswing.

Nutrition is a big part of our daily lives and as golfers we sometimes underestimate the importance of our nutrition on the course. There is no doubt that there is a trend towards healthier option but it is also worth considering what you need from your nutrition on the course, beyond just keeping you “full”. Here, Julia has put together a simple image of what might be an option for you to take to the course next time we get out playing. It may be similar to what you bring but if not it may be something for you to try.

Food

A quick and easy snack for the course. Choose whole foods like a banana or an apple, nuts (unsalted) and dried fruit that contain carbohydrates to give you energy and healthy fats and protein to keep your blood sugar level. For some added protein a piece of billtong can add variety to your on course snack. Try and eat something small every 3-4 holes to help keep your concentration levels up and drink water throughout your round. Hydration is really important for concentration and decision making on the course!

 

Looking to keep practicing?

Over the past few weeks some of you have been in touch asking about the availability of hitting nets for outdoor use. I must admit that they have been hard to get and even online suppliers are quoting long wait times and shortage of availability. I have managed to source a supplier who can supply the following for anyone who is interested or is at this stage desperate for some options!

The nets are 3mx3m with surround support roping. Included is cabling, fasteners for mounting cost is €155 including delivery. I have included some images of the nets and some ideas for hanging them. If you are interested please click here and I will try to get one to you, delivery is 2-3 working days.

Finally a big shout out to all members working in the front line of the health service, it must be incredibly stressful and I know I speak for all of us when I send a big thank you to those of you involved!

Fact of the week

According to the Guinness World Records, the longest hole in the world is the 7th hole at Satsuki GC in Japan. It measures a meagre 964 yards and is a par-7!!

Rumour has it that there’s also a hole measuring over 1,000 yards in South Korea, but that hasn’t made it into the records – yet.

Weekly challenge

What do you have left in your food cupboard? Baked beans? Tins of soup? Peaches? Whatever it is, grab six tins (or more if you’re feeling adventurous) and have a go at this week’s golfing challenge. We guarantee you some fun!

Weekly Challenge - Tin Pyramid

The set-up

Put the golf balls away and use a tennis ball or stress ball for this one – you do want to eat the food after all. Create a pyramid shape using the tins as in the photo above; we’ve balanced them on a garden trug so they’re almost at eye-level.

Just like when you’re at a fair, knock down all the tins in three shots and you win a prize - well, maybe not in this case! If you want to play with the family, let them have a go chipping or they can always throw the tennis balls if you’re super confident!

Golf at home

This week’s drill is all about improving your strike when putting. With such a small stroke – in comparison to a full swing – it’s easy to think that you can’t go wrong when putting. Well, give this drill a try and see how you get on.

What to do

Measure a ball’s width on the centre of your putter face and place a piece of blu-tack either side, as depicted in the image above. Set up a 10-foot putt in your home or garden and hit a few putts – if your strike is off-centre you’ll certainly feel and see a difference!

Striking the Blu-Tack?

If your ball hardly moves or you barely feel yourself striking the ball at impact, chances are you’ve hit a piece of blu-tack rather than the centre of the putter face. Give this a few tries – as well as from different distances – and see if you can spot a pattern. Let us know how you get on.
