Tip of the week Last week I mentioned that we would discuss the backswing and what makes a good backswing. I have added a video to our library and click here for the link, don't forget the password dlgc. The important thing is to keep things simple. A good backswing sets you up to move with speed and power in the downswing period, it doesn’t have to be perfect it just has to allow you to move in the most natural way you do when creating speed. Think of how easy it is to skim a stone across a lake and how instinctive it is, your downswing is largely the same but only if you are in a position to coordinate these movements from the top of your backswing. Remember golf is a still ball game which is why the backswing is so important. Key points for your backswing: - Your chest turns away from the target. Old school coaching would say “get your back to the target!”
- Your arms move with the turning of your body.
- You must have a sense of “pressure” or weight under your back foot.
- Keeping your “head down” or trying too hard to “stay still” will kill your ability to make a dynamic backswing. In as much as golf is a still ball game we have to keep things moving freely. Ben Hogan wrote an entire chapter on the importance of the waggle!
For most of you who are looking for more distance the simpler you can keep the backswing the better, keep these points in mind, get away from incorrect concepts like keeping your head down and staying still and free things up a little |
