The season is now well and truly in full swing and everyday the club is a hive of activity. The course is looking fantastic and the greens are the best I have seen them at this time of year. Many of you have commented on the speed of the greens in a positive way but it does take some getting used to. I remember many years ago spending some time with Andy Prodger, who many of you may have heard of but who's main claim to fame was as Nick Faldos caddy when he won his first Masters in 1989.
I asked him what the key was to putting on fast greens and his reply was at first a surprise, but I soon saw the value of what he said. "Stay aggressive, the faster the greens the more you have to commit to being positive and not letting those greens get the better of you. You may have the odd miss but stay aggressive and you'll get your share"
I wrote it down and never forgot those words as I remember when I first played in the states how much faster the greens were and how easy it was to be fearful of the sheer speed. So my friends, stay aggressive on the greens this summer, be positive and expect to hole everything you look at!
Best of luck to all our teams again this week. There is another pressure filled weekend coming up but remember you can only play one shot at a time!
Best of luck also to Conor O'Rourke and Jack Hume who are playing in the British Amateur in Carnoustie next week. I have a fondness for Carnoustie as it was the stage for Ben Hogan's only Open victory, indeed the one and only time he played in the competition and it is certainly as tough a test as you can get.
I'm sure they will enjoy!
As the schools break for the summer, you will notice more of our juniors around the club. We are very lucky to have so many juniors and it is a credit to the members that Naas GC is their club of choice when it comes to entry level to the game. Without your support this would not be the case. I am looking forward to monitoring their progress this summer and no doubt some new names will emerge as their handicaps tumble.
Junior competitions are on Mondays and time sheets are available along with coaching on Fridays. Please contact the pro shop prior to each Friday to book in for coaching.
I hope you enjoyed the reading the articles, and that you have a great weekend.
